Meet the team

Martin Connolly

Hi there,

I'm originally from the South Island of New Zealand, which is where I also started out diving back in the late 1990s. Back then it was all cold water (mostly mountain lakes) diving, but having that experience early-on, definitely means that I can appreciate how lucky I am to now live and work on the Great Barrier Reef.

After finishing high school I joined the Navy as an electronics and mechanical technician, which is where I spent the following four years; working and traveling all over the South Pacific. During this time I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to dive in some amazing places, including New Caledonia and The Solomon Islands.

Once I had left the Navy, my interest in furthering my diving abilities took over and so I went through my instructor-level training, while also completing a diploma in teaching.

Since then life has definitely been an adventure as I've made my way around the world, diving and working in Tonga; Thailand; Switzerland; Indonesia, and Turkey; to name a few places I've been lucky to visit and dive.

I also spent a number of years alternating between the summer seasons in Spain and winters in Andorra; an amazing time where I was able to scratch the itch for both diving and winter sports, though best of all were the great friends I made along the way.

Finally, after living in South East Asia for four years - which is where Lou and I met, we made our way to Far North Queensland, before establishing Scuba IQ Port Douglas, in 2017.

Aside from being a proud parent to our daughter, Alba, I now also fill a great deal of my spare time as a member of the local Fire and Rescue Service; using skills learned as a firefighter in the navy, as well as learning plenty of new ones!

While many of us are going through difficult times, and travel is restricted; we look forward to hopefully welcoming you to our beautiful home in the not-too-distant future.

Hi,

I'm Lou, the other half of Scuba IQ Port Douglas; where you can find me behind the scenes keeping things running in good order.

Having started out as a hair and makeup artist, where I worked in London in the early 2000s, I discovered scuba diving while backpacking up the East Coast of  Australia. This also included a couple of trips to the Great Barrier Reef.

After spending nearly a year traveling through this massive country, I made my way to Thailand, and from that point as they say 'the rest was history!

It was here that I undertook my dive professional training and then worked, taking travelers diving within the Koh Phi Phi Marine Park. During my time here I eventually found myself managing one of the busiest dive centers in Thailand and had the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the dive industry from the other side of the mask.

This beautiful part of the world was my home for eight years, with a couple of breaks while I went to work in some other amazing parts of the world, such as Malaysia; Mozambique, and the Philippines.

Living in South East Asia for so long meant that I was able to explore this incredible part of the world, and have been fortunate to have some wonderful memories including spending a month sailing and diving remote, far-flung parts of Indonesia, and completing the Everest Base Camp Trek.

So while you will dive with Martin, when you pick up the phone to call us, chances are that I will be on the other end, happy to discuss your diving options and answer any questions you might have about your visit to the Port Douglas region.

Martin and I look forward to hearing from you, and hopefully meeting you soon!
